Chapter 8

The next morning John’s alarm woke him up at six AM as planned. He finally had managed to fall asleep only a couple hours before the alarm had woken him up, so he felt like it was only midnight, which back home in Ottawa, it really was. He had a quick shower and that was followed by a strong cup of coffee and some fruit for breakfast. Then at 6:55 there was a knock on the door of the apartment and John answered it promptly.

The man standing at the door showed him his Sûreté credentials and John invited him inside. This officer spoke to John in French asking him if he can speak the language. He looked relieved when John replied that he could, but his French was not very good. The officer then said, “Please get your jacket and we will leave now.” Which of course John complied with this request right away.

Shortly after, John was downstairs and in this officer’s car, and the two were on their way in no time. They were off to a government building somewhere, but as John has never been to France before, he had no idea where that would be or even what direction they were heading too. As he was thinking about this, he noticed that he could see the sun rising and he knew that would be in the East, so from that he discerned that he was traveling to the west. The conversation with this officer was pleasant, but not anything about his purpose in visiting Paris. Finally, they arrived at a large and impressive building with many police officers doing their routine work.

They entered the building and John received a visitor tag that he clipped to his shirt and he added his CSE ID tag along side. The two got on an elevator and rode to a higher floor where they got off and entered a large boardroom. Once inside the boardroom there were several people sitting down and yet there were still a few empty seats, but none at the table, the available seats were all located around the wall of a windowless room.

Then John heard a familiar voice in English saying; “Good morning John. How was your flight?” John looked over and immediately recognised Arthur, the CIA agent attached with the American Embassy in Ottawa Canada. A familiar face was certainly welcomed by John. Still he expected to see at least one RCMP officer from Special O, and maybe one or two agents from CSIS. John took a seat near Arthur and the two of them engaged in some shop talk for a few minutes prior to the meeting starting up.

Slowly there was more people that trickled into the boardroom. And then there were other the Canadians who had just arrived to attend the briefing. John had to wait some time before his presentation and to answer questions, there were about five or six people before him, and everything was in French. John hoped his
